Welcome!
My name is Megan Casey and I am entering my second year as the full time teacher librarian at Washington Elementary in Mount Vernon. I teach preschool through fourth grade, and I enjoy sharing my love of reading with students in hopes that they will learn to love reading as well.
A love of reading is what drives my passion for my job, and I truly believe that reading year-round benefits a student beyond what research can measure. Thus, my interest in public library summer reading programs has inspired a further interest in year-round promotions for encouraging student reading success.
As a culmination of my years spent at the University of Northern Iowa, and as a final project requirement for my master's degree, I have completed preparation of a Successful Summer Reading Program Project Guide. The purpose of this guide is to use best practices of successful summer reading programs as a model for creating a guide for encouraging student reading success in a school library context.
My research paper, Defying the Odds: A Research Based Reading Program Guide, includes background justification and a literature review of past studies related to summer reading programs. The full paper may be accessed at the University of Northern Iowa School Library Studies Research page.
Acknowledgements:
I would like to acknowledge and thank Cathy Boggs, public librarian at Cole Public Library, for her expertise and collaboration on this project and for her continued support of the students and staff at Washington Elementary.
