DECEMBER
Because December is a shorter school month, we use the opportunity to create a holiday-based wish list event for students. One of the main focuses for December is collaboration with the public library, school staff, and students. The public librarian is invited to the school where they share a story with students and invite them to create the ultimate wish list of books that they would like the public library to buy. Because public libraries often have a more flexible budget than school libraries are allowed, the public library is more apt to purchase any titles that they do not currently own. The teacher librarian may also use the list to grow their library collection. This opportunity for the public librarian to reintroduce themselves to students is a great reminder for students to visit the public library over winter break while encouraging free choice reading. Students that request books and have a library card will be notified by the public library when those books are available for first check out. School staff are also invited to share in the wish list fun.

- Building relationships between the public librarian and students
- Encouragement of positive independent reading habits and free choice reading
- Ample opportunities for library use
- Teacher librarian and public librarian collaboration
- Access for all students, including those of low socioeconomic status: Wish lists are open to all- there is no cost to participate.
