The Summer Slide
The 'Summer Slide' is described as the tendency for students, especially those of lower income status, to fall behind on some of the achievement gains made during the previous school year.
Research based programs that involve both school and public librarians in seeking ways to eliminate summer reading barriers and help all students have successful reading experiences are needed. Understanding that developing literacy skills at an early age is critical to future success, and teacher librarians and public librarians may bridge a summer reading setback gap as they work together to create a community of parents, educators, and librarians who can decrease the effects of summer reading loss.
