MARCH
In the month of March, readers everywhere celebrate the birthday of literary genius Dr. Seuss with Read Across America. At Washington Elementary, Read Across America is a week-long celebration of books, reading, and Dr. Seuss! During the week of Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2), students may dress up according to themes set for each day. Each day of the week has a special event planned, ranging from a Read and Feed, a time to relax, munch on a snack, and read, to having community and parent volunteers read aloud to classrooms. We want everyone involved in this week's events regardless of their home status. Therefore, the teacher librarian and classroom teachers work together with the school nurse to provide any additional clothing or food items necessary to ensure all students that want to be involved have equal opportunity. March is a wonderful opportunity to involve community members, parents, and staff in promoting student reading.

Elements of a successful summer reading program that will be addressed in March:
- Promoting positive independent reading habits
- Building relationships with students and families
- Ample opportunities for library use
- Access for all students, including those of low socioeconomic status: Collaboration efforts by teachers and the school nurse allow all students to participate. Clothing and food items are prepared prior to each event and used according to student needs.
