JANUARY
The summer reading guide for school-year use during the month of January is designed to appeal to a young male population, but all students will be invited to participate. In January, students are transformed into superheros as they 'Unleash Your Superpowers: Read!' Graphic novels are often overlooked as a suitable reading material for students, but for many struggling readers and students who do not prefer a traditional book, graphic novels could serve as a great medium for interesting reluctant readers. Additionally, while graphic novels appeal to all readers, the idea of superheroes and reading comic books could especially appeal to a male population. Each week, the library will feature a new set of graphic novels to introduce a new option for readers.
The reading goal for the month of January is set by students as an individual goal with the help of the teacher librarian or library associate. Students will track their own reading successes as they work towards reaching their own goal. Goals may be based on a number of books read, or by a number of minutes read. In order to assist in reaching their superhero power goals, January is also the month that the library introduces its Superhero Buddy Readers Program.
Superhero Buddy Readers are partner readers that have a set day and time to meet and read together. The classroom teacher may facilitate the partners within their own room, but it is encouraged that older readers partner with younger readers as a reading mentor piece. We hope that younger readers will be inspired by their older counterparts to unleash their own reading powers!
At the end of the month, an announcement will be made totaling the number of books and number of minutes read by the building as a whole and Superhero Buddy Readers are encouraged to celebrate their successes and meet to create their very own comic strip or mini graphic novel.
