FEBRUARY
A school-wide 'You Take the Cake' silent auction is the heart of involvement for students and families at Washington Elementary in February. Students that choose to participate in the cake auction must read the book related to their decorated cake, and prepare a cake for auction. Families drop off cakes in the morning and a silent auction runs through a set ending time at which winning bidders are asked to pick up their cakes. Throughout the school day, classes visit the library to view cakes. Funds raised are placed into the library birthday book fund, the general library budget, and used for student activities. Cakes are judged by the public librarian and regular library volunteers. The decorators of the top three cake finalists are awarded the honor of choosing a book from our school birthday book list to donate to the library in their names. This opportunity is a great reason for families to read a book together and then enjoy building a cake! It also serves as another opportunity for the public librarian, staff, parents and community to be present in the library.
