APRIL
April is National Poetry Month! Washington Elementary participates in a world-wide celebration of reading, listening to, writing, and sharing poetry. Information for teachers may be found on the National Poetry Month website as linked below, and supporting documents for an April Poetry Slam may be found below. A poetry slam is an event for students to showcase poetry that they have written or memorized for staff, students, and parents. At Washington Elementary, the event will take place during school hours, but will be videotaped and linked to the library website for all parents to experience. Reading, writing, listening to, and sharing poetry allows students to experience a different medium of literature while learning about poetry styles, famous poets, and the history of poetry. The poetry slam encourages parents to get involved in their child's reading experiences and allows for an additional opportunity to experience what the school library program has to offer!
Elements of a successful summer reading program that will be addressed in April:

Elements of a successful summer reading program that will be addressed in April:
- Building relationships with students and caregivers
- Introduction to parent and student accountability in reading
- Encouragement of positive independent reading habits
- Ample opportunities for library use
- Access for all students, including those of low socioeconomic status: There is no cost for students, and parents unable to attend the public viewing may do so at a later time. Possible additions to the program could include a second show for interested families.
