OCTOBER
The month of October is focused on a school-wide and globally-based read aloud opportunity. Global Read Aloud is a reading promotion that has one main goal: to connect the whole world with one book. The library will provide copies of the book for classroom teachers to read aloud. Over a six-week period, beginning in October, teachers follow a master reading schedule to complete the chosen book. As they read, teachers are encouraged to connect with classrooms in the building and around the world. The teacher librarian facilitates connecting classroom teachers with other readers through programs like Edmodo, Skype, and Twitter. To encourage student participation, the teacher librarian also connects with readers around the world during regular specials classes. Students begin to use the library for more than just checking out books as they navigate technology to connect with students outside of their school building. Please visit the Global Read Aloud webpage link below for required information and supporting material.
October is also the month of the first round of conferences for the year. As such, the teacher librarian invites all caregivers to attend the book fair that occurs during scheduled conference times to get to know the teacher librarian and, should they choose, purchase books.
Finally, beginning in October, the teacher librarian begins to invite caregivers to the library for Books and Bagels, a morning book talk program. The teacher librarian provides coffee and bagels courtesy of WETAP, Washington Elementary's parent support group. An informational note will be sent home with students in advance of the meeting, and the teacher librarian will prepare a book talk for parents, showcasing recommended reads for students, new library materials, and offering resources to help caregivers support student reading success. Meetings will be divided among grade levels over the following eight months. The public librarian attends meetings as a way to better know caregivers and encourage use of the public library. A sample Books & Bagels menu is included below.

Elements of a successful summer reading program that will be addressed in October:
- Building relationships with caregivers
- Caregiver accountability
- Informational and educational opportunities for caregivers
- Ample opportunities for caregivers to visit the library
- Access for all students, including those of low socioeconomic status: Programs such as Global Read Aloud help to provide equal access for all students because all classes are provided the same opportunities to meet students from around the world, listen to the same story, and explore new technologies while at school.
