NOVEMBER
November kicks off the first school-wide reading competition and promotion of the school year. The 40 Day Challenge is a reading competition that encourages students to read in 40 different locations in 40 days. The 40 day checklist outlines the locations in which students need to read in order to reach the classroom goal of reading in every location on the list. Individually, students complete as many challenges as they can, but ultimately this is a team effort for a class to work together to meet a reading goal. Students are encouraged to read with adults or siblings at home and even with their pets! Children may choose to read books, or a variety of reading materials with the only stipulation being a time requirement for each checklist location. For each grade level, the classroom that completes the challenge list will win a prize pack of books, board games, bookmarks, and a snack, for their room to enjoy. Every student will receive a bookmark for participation.

Elements of a successful summer reading program that will be addressed in November:
- Building positive independent reading habits
- Ample opportunities for library use
- Access for all students, including those of low socioeconomic status: Student participation is voluntary, but encouraged regardless of socioeconomic status. The rules define a time and location requirement for reading that should not be effected by financial strain. As the competition is class-wide there is less pressure on individual students and more emphasis on teamwork to accomplish a common goal.
- Encouraging students' personal reading accountability
